Welcome to the World of Podcasts. These are very informative and rich
with information. If you have not yet tried
podcasts, here are some that offer up-to-date canine health information that
you need to know:
The Genome Barks podcast series
features lectures from the highly successful AKC-CHF Breeders
Symposia and provides responsible breeders and pet owners an inside look
at the work being done by the AKC and the AKC Canine Health Foundation.
New podcasts are released every two weeks and can be accessed from either
the American Kennel Club website at
www.akc.org or the AKC Canine Health Foundation website at
www.akcchf.org - click on "Podcasts." They are also available on
Apple's iTunes® or directly at
www.genomebarks.com.
Web Sites

The Broad Institute website has information on participating in an
osteosarcoma research study to find the genetic marker for bone cancer.
Leonberger participation is needed! |

Leo Watch is the web site of the Health, Research and Education
Committee of the Leonberger Club of America. This site contains
information on many of the illnesses common to Leonbergers, as well as an
open registry with data on diseases believed to be of genetic origin. |

Orthopedic Foundation for Animals collects and disseminates
information on orthopedic and genetic disease of dogs and other animals. |
 |
Access
to abstracts from the
Journal of the American Veterinary Association and the American Journal of
Veterinary Research is available through the
American Veterinary Medical Association. |

The Dog Genome Project of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center provides
information on canine genetics, and also accepts DNA cheek swabs from
specific (AKC registered only) breeds to help further research on canine
genetically inherited diseases. |

The
Morris Animal Foundation funds studies in many areas of canine health,
including hip dysplasia, cancer, and genetically inherited diseases. |

The University of Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program,
better known
as PennHIP, is a method (using x-rays) of assessing the canine hip joint
to determine the risk of developing hip dyplasia. The PennHIP site
contacts a directory of veterinarians certified in administering the
PennHIP test. |

CERF is the Canine Eye Foundation, an organization dedicated to the
elimination of heritable eye diseases in dogs. CERF maintains a database
of purebred dogs that have been certified free of genetically inherited
eye diseases, as well as monitoring trends in eye diseases and breed
susceptibility. |

Founded
by the American Kennel Club, the mission of the
Canine Health Foundation is "to develop basic and applied health
programs with an emphasis on canine genetics to improve the quality of
life for canines and their owners." The site contains information on a
variety of canine health issues, and details on research sponsored by the
CHF and breed parent clubs. |
Listservs
and Discussion Groups
Leonberger Cancer
Support Group is a discussion group which shares information
and support on caring for Leos with any type of cancer, although most have
had osteosarcoma. Go to
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/leonbergercancersupport/ for instructions
on subscribing.
Harvey's
Disease Support List
is for owners and breeders of Leonbergers diagnosed with or showing symptoms
of laryngeal paralysis/polyneuropathy. Resources available include names of
veterinarians who have dealt with the disease, published papers and
articles, and other information. This is a restricted list. Please contact
