Leonberger Health Foundation Founder and President Emeritus Waltraut Zieher

In 1984, Waltraut moved permanently to the United States from Germany with her family and one Leonberger, Bea von Wasserturm. The following year, she became a founding member of the Leonberger Club of America. With her daughter, Ute, and fellow LHF Board member, Carol Lewis, Waltraut founded the Health Education and Research Committee for the LCA.
In 2000, Waltraut founded the Leonberger Health Foundation and served as its president until 2009, when she decided to step down and take on an advisory role.
Waltraut has been widely recognized for her work with, and on behalf of, Leonbergers, and has received multiple awards, including the Heinrich Essig Award from the Leonberger Club of America and the Millennium Award from the Club Italiano del Leonberger. The inscription on the Millennium Award simply states her significance to the Leonberger breed: “For giving the right importance to the breed health problems and setting an example for all the other clubs in the world."
