Waltraut Zieher Award
Mission Statement
Waltraut Zieher had the kind of love that brought dedication, unparalleled commitment, hard work, and total devotion to preserving the Leonberger; a dog filled with the beauty, vitality and longevity that only comes with radiant health.
As a breeder, founder and long-time member of the LCA and LHF, Waltraut blazed the trail, gave us the vision, the map, the tools and the inspiration to carry on the journey she began.
In honor of her memory, and absolute dedication to the betterment of the Leonberger, the LHFI will award the prestigious Waltraut Zieher Memorial Leonberger Health Award to deserving candidates who have made a measurable impact on the health of the Leonberger.
Nominees
This is an international award.
The Nominee is required to have made a significant contribution to the health of the Leonberger.
The nominee may include the following:
Nominations
Due Date: May 1 of each year
Must be submitted to the LHFI Board by three people. The nomination may be made by three individuals or together as a group. The three should consist of a(n):
Breeder
Owner
Member of the national club board.
Scientific claims in the nominating statement need to be corroborated by an appropriate scientific authority with a letter of support.
Announcement and Acceptance of the Award
The announcement shall occur on the anniversary of Waltraut’s Zieher’s birthday month of August, any year that an award is to be given. This award will not be given annually, only in years when a deserving nominee is presented to the LHFI Board.
The Awardee will have the opportunity to accept the award at the following LCA National Specialty or in writing in the LeoLetter with an acceptance speech or article outlining their contributions to the Leonberger breed.

The Nominee is required to have made a significant contribution to the health of the Leonberger.
The nominee may include the following:
- National Club membership
- Significant long-term advancement for breed health with international implications
- Documentation that they "walk the talk"
- Leonberger Breeder
- Who observes and tracks their litters for health and temperament issues, with open and honest reporting to appropriate bodies and action to improve the overall health of the Leonberger.
- Who follows the breeding protocols of their club/country and meets or exceeds the health testing requirements.
- Scientist who had made a signification contribution to the health of the Leonberger
- Club official who has motivated and enabled a substantial improvement of the health of Leonbergers.
- Leonberger owner who has shown dedication and action in major advancement of the health of the Leonberger breed.
